Research Projects & Major Accomplishments

Diagnostic survey of migratory buffaloes, sheep and goats in Western Himalayas – Dehradun Centre (NATP) [Year: 1999-2001; Role: Co-PI]

By improving the pastures, supplementing feed with nutrients and providing health cover to livestock en route of migratory herders; migratory animal husbandry can be a viable economic enterprise. On the spot training of shepherds/ Gujjars on scientific livestock rearing can improve their proficiency in management of livestock. Financial assistance along with the technical know-how will go a long way in improving the health and productivity of livestock and socio-economic conditions of the migratory grazers.

Technology Assessment and Refinement (TAR/IVLP-NATP) [Year: 1999-2006; Role: CC-PI]

In this project, four livestock based interventions were executed in the IVLP adopted villages. At the start of the project, productivity of cow was only 1.04 lit./ day which became 1.21 lit./ day in the year 2001-2002 (16 % increase). Again in the year 2003-2004 it became 1.53 lit./ day. An enhancement of 47 % was observed as compared to the productivity in the year 1999-2000. In the case of buffaloes slightly more enhancement was recorded. In buffaloes, in the year 1999-2000 productivity was only 2.18 lit./ day which increased by 21 % and became 2.64 lit./ day and in 2003-2004 it was recorded as 3.46 lit./ day after an increment of 59 % over the year 1999-2000. There was significant reduction in the calving interval and age at first calving was also lowered down due to project interventions. Interventions based on health care measures significantly reduced the worms’ load and incidences of diseases in the livestock. Improved body weight gain was observed due to deworming of the goats. In addition to the above, over all 20 percent increase was noticed in livestock wealth of the farmers in the study area during the project period.

Improvement of Productivity of Migratory Buffalo Herds (NATP) [Year: 2001-2005; Role: PI]

Enhanced nutrient availability due to introduction on UMMB in the feeding system of migratory buffaloes reduced the nutrient gap and improved health and productivity of livestock in the areas covered under the project. By supplementing livestock diet with adequate quantity of UMMB and by providing proper health coverage, higher production of milk can be achieved, resulting in increased economic gains to the nomads.

Development of sustainable animal-agricultural system for the farmers of Garhwal Himalayas [Year: 2000-2001; Role: Leader]

Animal agricultural farming system prevailing in the target area was studied. Cereal and vegetable based farming system was prevailing in this region supported by livestock. Numbers of cattle were more than buffaloes and goats were more preferred than sheep. Forest, road side grasses and tree leaves were being fed to the animals throughout the year. In winter season, people were facing acute shortage of fodder due to heavy snowfall in nearby forest and village itself. Stall feeding was done to milch buffaloes only. While other animals were being sent to jungle for grazing. All dairy animals are suffering from copper and cobalt deficiencies which were reflected by low reproductive performances of the livestock. Feeding and management of farm animals was done by farm women only. Marketing of the produce was done by male counter part. Women had very little perception about new technologies of crop-animal production due to high rate of illiteracy.

Assessment of diffusion of Institute Village Linkage Programme (IVLP) interventions,  [Year: 2001-2005; Role: Associate]

This project was formulated to study the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers and its impact on their adoption behaviour and to find out the extent of adoption of recommended technologies in the IVLP adopted villages and to assess the diffusion of technologies from IVLP adopted villages to the neighbouring non-adopted villages. Socio-economic status had no significant impact on adoption behaviour of the farmers because of two basic reasons, viz; marginal size of holdings and prevalent rainfed farming. Overall adoption in adopted villages was found to be 63% (active adoption 29% and symbolic adoption – 34%) while 37% farm practices introduced were discontinued. In non-adopted villages, overall adoption was found to be 51% (active adoption- 11.11% & symbolic adoption 18.51%). Discontinuance observed was 21.28%.

Development and Evaluation of Integrated Farming System in Middle Himalayas,  [Year: 2001-2006; Role: Associate]

Ecologically sound low-input integrated farming system in conjunction with natural streams and water mills in hilly region was developed. Indigenous and exotic fish and other species of integration were evaluated for production potential. Economic viability of the integrated farming system and its adaptability in the region was also studied. Variations in water quality and seasonality in the availability of water and other inputs for enhanced production through integrated farming system were analysed. Local farming community was involved in the development and management of integrated fish farming comprising fish, poultry, duckery, piggery etc. as self-sustaining and remunerative system in the Middle Himalayas.

Characterization of livestock production sub system and assessment of critical nutritional gap in Bay Islands [Year: 2006-2010; Role: Leader]

Farmers belonging to South, Middle and North Andaman were surveyed for their land and animal resources and availability of fodder resources for their livestock. It was observed that the animals are deficient in micronutrient and protein leading to low productivity of the Animals.

Silvipasture system: Effect of fertilizer and cutting on net primary production (herbage production) in humid tropical climate of Bay Islands [Year: 2006-2010; Role: Associate]

Enhanced fodder production reduced the fodder scarcity and improved health and productivity of livestock at Livestock Farm Complex

Factors influencing productive and reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle under island ecosystem [Year: 2006-2010; Role: Associate]

Climatic factors may have less or minimal influence over the performance of the cross bred cows under the island condition. However, the climate and season may have indirect influence in terms of availability balanced nutrition (feed and fodder) which is available sufficiently during monsoon than dry season. Under this island condition and considering the seasonal influence and seasonal pattern of calving and highest milk yield during monsoon season, the controlled breeding programme which has been standardized at farm level may well be recommended for maintaining uniformity in production and for the maximum exploitation of the potential of the cow. This also coincides with availability of feed and fodder resources under field condition. Ultrasonography has been found to be valuable diagnostic tool in management of reproduction and diagnosing various problems in cows and the technology has already been transferred to door step of farmer. Other managemental factors viz. using EC meter to detect mastitis at early stage and regular supplementation of mineral mixture for better performance and pelletized feed having deworming drugs may be promoted among the farmers to reduce the worm burden and improving the production during monsoon season.

Productivity enhancement of pigs under island ecosystem [Year: 2006-2010; Role: Associate]

Traditional feeding system (viz, feeding colocasia) for pigs need supplementation of energy and micro nutrient like Zinc to get optimum production from the exotic breeds of pigs.

Development of database on fodder resources and waste land of Bay Islands [Year: 2007-2010; Role: Associate]

The database system had been designed and developed for fodder resources of A&N islands. Data related to fodder resources available in various publications and field data were compiled to give information about the properties of individual fodder variety viz. fodder name, variety, palatability, growth and yield was collected and documented.

Productivity enhancement of Goats in Bay Islands [Year: 2007-2010; Role: Associate]

The F1 generation goats appeared phenotypically similar to Boer. Under the farm condition, the growth rate in terms of body weight at birth, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months were significantly higher than the local goats. Boer cross goats were released by the CARI. The approximate body weight of Boer cross (F1) at 2 years was found to be 45 to 50 kg under farm and field. Body weight gain was significantly higher (P<0.05) in females (22.14±3.4 kg) than males (41.0±3.0) at 3 months after distribution of goats. Gut microbes from the kid were isolated to see the antibiotic sensitivity pattern. It was observed that the majority of the isolates were gram positives and most of the isolates are sensitive to the antibiotics. The production and evaluation of cross bred goat is in progress both under farm and field condition.

Productivity enhancement and sustainable dairy production in Bay Islands [Year: 2006-2011; Role: Associate]

Performance of HF cross and Jersey crossbred cows showed that the lactation yield (in lit), lactation length (days), days to reach peak yield were significantly (P<0.05) higher in HF cross than Jersey cross. No significant difference was observed between HF cross and Jersey cross in average daily milk yield per lactation peak yield and birth weight of calves. Inter calving period (days) was higher in HF cross (534.22±44.0) than Jersey cross (497.56±28.1). Age at first calving (in days) was early in HF cross (885.0±69.8) than Jersey cross (1173.7±71.7).

Determination of carrying capacity of islands and its potential for organic farming [Year: 2009-2011; Role: Leader]

Carrying capacity of the Islands was calculated for the projected human and livestock population in 2011, 2021 and 2031.

Feasibility evaluation of growing fodder during pre paddy and post paddy period under rainfed conditions [Year: 2009-2014; Role: Leader]

Fodder grasses were planted in pre paddy season (May-June), followed by long duration paddy (July- November), and followed by very early duration maize on residual moisture. If there are rains in January whose probability is 60%, i.e., three out of five years, the farmer can harvest maize cobs which have very good market during tourist season as well as fodder. If no rains are received, the farmer will get fodder. In July the fodder will have to be harvested within a week, and therefore a hay making system using solar energy and ensilaging system have also been designed. This system had been found to produce about 60 t/ha fodder in July and about 30 t/ha fodder in January. As crop-livestock system is a rule rather than exception for Island farmer and fodder is a major constraint to milk production, this system will greatly enhance the income of the farmer. The pre-paddy fodder grass will be a leguminous one and therefore will take care of nutrient depletion by maize.

Molecular Characterization of Indigenous Pigs of Bay Islands by Microsatellite Markers Allocation [Year: 2010-2013; Role: Associate]

During the course of survey a new pig germplasm had been identified. It was different from the exotic breeds.

Utilization of metabolizable (RDP and RUP) proteins in diet of Frieswal cattle for increasing productivity [Year: 2007-2011; Role: Associate]

The growing bulls were fed on wheat straw, seasonal green fodder (sorghum, mixture of Berseem and sugarcane top) and concentrate mixture. The quantity of concentrate mixture in group 1 was offered as per the BRU feeding schedule and in group 2 and 3 that much quantity was offered as was required to fulfill the remaining requirement of RDP and RUP which remained deficient after offering wheat straw and green fodder for an expected gain of 700 and 1000 g/d.

During digestibility trial total dry matter intake in three groups from wheat straw, green fodder and concentrate mixture was 7.27, 6.92 and 8.57 kg/d in group 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The DMI (kg/100 kg B. Wt.) in three groups was 2.15, 2.07 and 2.24.  The body weight after 561 days of feeding period was 428.0, 404.2 and 480.4 kg in group 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The total gain during feeding period in three groups was 302.2, 277.6 and 353.60 kg thus yielding an ADG of 538.68, 494.83 and 630.30 g, respectively.

The CP intake in three groups was 870.96, 950.89 and 1139.16 g/d and was adequate as per the requirement of the animals. The gross energy intake was 30.88, 29.07 and 35.89 Mcal/d in respective three groups. The digestible energy intake was 19.02, 18.58 and 22.17 Mcal/d in Gr I, Gr II and Gr III, respectively. The calculated ME intake was 16.16, 15.79 and 18.84 Mcal/d in three groups. The digestibility of nutrients for DM, CP, NDF, ADF, Hemicellulose, Cellulose and Energy was almost uniform in three groups and is within normal range of variation.

Milk urea nitrogen estimation to study the nutritional status of Frieswal herd
[Year: 2010-2013; Role: Leader]

In majority of the cases the MUN contents ranged between 23.96 – 35.01 mg/dl. The highest MUN values were observed during summer season (32.36 ± 0.23 mg/dl) followed by winter season (29.98 ± 0.21 mg/dl). The lowest MUN values were observed during post monsoon period (24.67 ± 0.29 mg/dl). The MUN values are on higher side compared to reported values in the literature. During winter months MUN values were slightly lower and on the onset of summer the values of MUN increased which further decreased during monsoon season when plenty of succulent cultivated fodder was offered to the animals which indicates that imbalance in the calorie-protein ratio of the feed offered to the animals was more during summer months.

Enhancing Milk Production by Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

An experiment was carried out in four institute village linkage programme adopted villages involving 322 farm families on 240 milking animals (120 cows and 120 buffaloes). Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks were provided to all the selected animals @ 300 g/ day/ animal for 3 months. An increase of maximum 37 percent was observed in milk production in buffaloes while in cows milk production was increased by maximum 32 percent. During mid-lactation the effect of Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks feeding was more profound than early and late lactation in both cows and buffaloes. On overall basis, milk production was increased by 34 and 30.8 percent in cows and buffaloes, respectively. After analysing the data it was found that a net profit of Rs. 1435 and 2325 was observed in cows and buffaloes, respectively after deducted the cost of Urea Molasses Mineral Block.

Enhancement of milk production by Urea (ammonia) treatment of crop residues (wheat and paddy straw) [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

It was found that a growth rate of 200 g per day was observed in growing heifers by consuming treated straw while in the case of untreated straw it was only 100 g per day in the institute village linkage programme adopted villages. A farmer obtained up to 4 kg milk from buffalo by the use of treated straw along with 250 g concentrate. Urea (ammonia) treated straw was just like green jowar in nutritive value. Effect of treated straw could be best seen during scarcity period and unfavorable weather.

Enhancing reproductive performance by feeding of mineral mixture [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

Demonstration of feeding of mineral mixture to milch animals was done at several farmers’ fileds during 1999-2006. By feeding mineral mixture for 21 days regularly, repeat breeding, anoestrous and other infertility problems were cured.

Enhancing animal health and productivity by endo and ecto parasite control [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

There was more growth in dewormed goats as compared to non-dewormed. Maximum growth was observed in the kids weighing up to 10 kg.

Enhancing animal health and productivity by disease control [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

A large population of animals was infected with Foot and mouth disease, Haemorrhagic Septicaemia and Black quarter every year in Institute Village Linkage Programme adopted villages. During Participatory Rural Appraisal, these diseases were highlighted specially by the villagers. In Foot and mouth disease although casualties were not there but this disease affects production up to a great extent. There was less milk production in milch animals and loss of working efficiency in bullocks. Keeping in view the above facts, a vaccination campaign was started. As a result of this all the animals were found free from these diseases. The farmers of these villages fully adopted this technology and were continuing the same even after the withdrawal of the project.

Introduction of backyard poultry/pig production [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

Guinea Fowl chicks (2 months old) procured from Pantnagar University @ Rs.40/- per chick were distributed to farm families in IVLP adopted villages. Average body weight was 620 g. At the age of 20 weeks, it attained a body weight of 1.4 kg, which was sold at the rate of Rs.100/- per bird. Each family gained a net profit of Rs.1200/- after deducting the initial cost of chicks. Rearing Guinea Fowl as backyard poultry can increase family income. A unit of at least 100 chicks can earn a profit of Rs.6000/- in five months or Rs.1200/- per month.

Scientific rearing of the livestock [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

In different on-farm training programmes, farmers were educated towards modern livestock rearing practices. In addition to this, personal contact method was also followed. Now farmers have started using Manger for feeding of fodder and chaffing of fodder is a regular practice now in the IVLP adopted villages.

Improved cultivars of perennial fodder crops [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

Improved cultivars of fodder resulted in increased fodder availability to the livestock and significant increase in milk production in Andaman Nicobar Islands

Improved cross bred goats (Local Andaman X Boar goat)  [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

Improved cross bred goats performed well at the Island farmers’ fields and socio-economic conditions of the farmers were improving

Exotic strains of Pigs   [Participatory Approach; Collaborative]

Exotic strains of pigs performed well at the Island farmers’ fields and socio-economic conditions of the farmers were improved and farmers had adopted it as a micro business module.

Use of Wheat Flour as binder in manufacturing Urea Molasses Mineral Block (UMMB)

During the manufacturing of Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks, calcite or bentonite or cement is used as binder. All these substances are inert material and do not provide any nutrition to the animals except working as binder. In place of these inert materials wheat flour was used as binder which acted as binder also and provided nutrition to the animals. The keeping quality of these blocks was better than the blocks manufactured using calcite, bentonite or cement as binder. These blocks were more preferred by the livestock owners and acceptability was more by the animals. This refinement in the existing technology is of great commercial importance.
